Historic Soap Creek Valley Auto Tour

Bob Zybach

1989

This self-guided automobile tour was intended as a promotional handout at OSU Research Forests field trips and events, and as a goodwill publication for interested local citizens and residents. Copies were given away free: the first printing was 2500 copies and was distributed in a few months time. A second edition, with fancier cover graphics and an 8' x 10" foldout map, was produced in two printings -- first, 1000 copies, and then 500. So far as known, these were the only printings of this tour guide.

In addition to goodwill and promotion, the tour guides were also intended to help keep recreational visitors to OSU Research Forests in known locations and routes of travel. For the first several years it was in use, bright fiberglass markers with Stop #'s were placed at each of the 11 scheduled stops. These were also placed, wherever possible, near road pull-outs so that tourists had safe parking and were out of the way of local and commercial traffic.

The creation of this booklet led to the completion of the Soap Creek Valley Oral History Series, followed by an OSU Masters Thesis: Using Oral Histories to Document Changing Forest Cover Patterns: Soap Creek Valley, Oregon, 1500-1999.
